Fred & Karen Vinton - Congo, Africa

January 2008

Dear family and friends,

We thank God for bringing us to another new year to serve Him and have enjoyed having Katie and Valerie with us over the holidays.

We'd like to share with you three prayer concerns.

First, I'm sure you've heard about the unrest in Kenya following the recent presidential election. We are saddened by the news of people who have lost their lives and who have become displaced. RVA has had to postpone the opening of school until January 19. This is a big disappointment for Katie and Valerie. Please pray for peace to return to Kenya and that we would rest in God's care during this uncertain time.

Second, I am teaching a group in the Kipaka church who want to be involved in evangelism. I have found that their understanding of the Gospel is very deficient. For example, I have spent the past three weeks trying to help them understand that when Jesus died, He was punished for all of our sins and therefore a Christian is forgiven of all sins--past, present, and future. They are willing to accept that Christ died for the sins they committed before being saved, but insist that every time a Christian sins, he loses his salvation and can only be saved again if he confesses that sin. Please pray that their eyes would be opened to the truly good news of the Gospel that Jesus paid it all.

Third, I just began a Bible Study with Hadji (the Muslim who put his faith in Christ last spring) and his three wives. His wives were not involved in our earlier study, so we are doing a study on salvation. I am meeting with them on Thursday mornings at 6:00. We had our first study this week and it went well (once I woke them up!). Please pray that this study would result in the salvation of Hadji's wives and in helping Hadji to grow in his faith.

Love in Christ,
Fred, Karen, Katie, Valerie, and Matthew
